Cultural Talk

   To Prospective Students:

    This self-study unit aims to help you develop higher cross-cultural awareness and learn colloquial expressions.  There are various interesting issues tackled in this self-study programme.  They may occur to your daily life or at the time when you get along with foreigners.  Through this programme, you will have chance to reflect on your own cultural identity and learn what foreigners think.  You will also learn how to avoid understanding, offence while getting along with people from different culture so that you may establish better relationship with people from different countries.  Meanwhile, you can also practice your listening comprehension and learn a lot of useful expressions for daily conversation.  In brief, after this self-study programme, you will increase your cross-cultural communicative competence and become a better Intercultural Communicator!

 

    There will be five units in this programme.  In every unit, there will be five foreigners talking about their ideas.  Before watching the video or listening to the interview, try to answer the questions in the first section-Asking Yourself.  This part is very important because it will lead you to know better about yourself and later compare and contrast your ideas and the foreigners¡¦.  The second section is Mirror Talk where you can watch video clips of interviews with the foreigners.  After each interview, there is a transcript and a list of language learning points in the section of Language Learning.  The fourth section is Cultural Learning in which further cultural analysis is provided for developing better cross-cultural understanding.  The last section is Check Points.  There will be a simple quiz assisting you to examine how much you have learned.  Finally, enjoy the course!

Section 1 (Introduction)

* Interviewee¡¦s background.

Asking Yourself:

*How much do you know about yourself, your country, your hometown, your culture?

*How do you get along with people? How do you communication with people from different cultures?

Section 2 (Main Text)

Mirror Talk:

*How a foreigner think about people in Taiwan? How do they perceive Taiwan and Taiwanese culture?

*What do they think about getting along with Taiwanese people?

Section 3 (Practice I or Extended Learning I)

Language Learning:

*What does the interviewee ¡¥say¡¦? 

*Practicing listening comprehension. And learning key words, expressions and grammar points from the transcript.

Cultural Learning:

*What does the interviewee ¡¥mean¡¦?

*Getting insight into cultural differences and developing intercultural awareness and understanding.
