Entertainment

A. Introduction

When traveling, I always like to take in some entertainment.  Whether I go to the movies

(cinema in English), the theater, a concert or a comedy club, I like to take advantage of

whatever the local culture can provide.  What follows is some useful vocabulary you

might need when navigating a newspaper’s entertainment guide.

B. Useful vocabulary

  • Box office/ticket office – the place where one can buy tickets to a play, concert or film or pick up tickets already reserved ahead of time.

Meet me at the box office 15 minutes before the play starts.

  • Reservations – one can make reservations at a restaurant, which means booking a time for a table.  One can also reserve tickets for a concert or show.

“Hello, this is Tina Liu.  I would like to make a reservation for four for this evening at 7:30.”

  • Booking – In one sense, this is a synonym for reservation, eg: I am booking a table for this evening at 8:00.  Another meaning of the word means “an engagement or scheduled performance,” eg: Robin Williams has a booking at The Comedy Store next month.

  • Playbill (American) /programme (English) – At a theater performance, this is the booklet that is available which gives information about the play, the cast, the scenes and so on.  In American theaters, they are free and full of advertisements for local restaurants and bars, among other things.  In England, there is a small charge for them, usually between £2-4. (You can find out more about Playbill at Playbill: Broadway, Off-Broadway, London News, Listings and Tickets

I have a collection of Playbills from all the plays I’ve seen since I was a teenager.

  • Reviews – Available in newspapers, magazines and on-line, this is a critical evaluation of a performance, exhibit or film.  Most people are familiar with film reviews, but there are also reviews available for theater and museum exhibits as well.

I read the reviews for The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee, and I can’t wait to see it.  I was originally interested as I grew up in Putnam County!

  • Cast—the actors and actresses in a play.

The entire cast of Mother Courage and her Children is absolutely amazing, but Meryl Streep is breath-taking.

Mother Courage and her Children

  • Matinee – A show during the day, usually on Wednesdays, Saturdays, and Sundays.  These shows usually cost a little less.

When I was a girl, my mother took us to Broadway matinees during the school holidays.

  • Symphony orchestra—a large orchestra of winds, strings, and percussion that plays symphonic works.

Almost every city in America has its own symphony orchestra.  Many have excellent concerts at very reasonable prices.

  • Cabaret--a restaurant serving liquor and providing entertainment, usually singers.

Thursday night my favorite restaurant holds a cabaret night featuring local singers.  It’s usually quite fun.

  • Encore—an additional performance demanded by an audience

Bruce Springsteen used to be famous for his encores.  Some nights he would stay on state three hours!

 Bruce Springsteen

  • Opening act—at a concert or comedy act, a lesser-known band or comedian who performs a short set before the main attraction.

The rock band KISS was once the opening act for Golden Earring.  Now, 20 years later, who remembers Gold Earring?

Golden Earring?

  • Curtain time—The time a play starts.  It is considered rude to arrive after curtain time, and some theaters will not allow patrons to be seated until the first scene is over.

Curtain time is 8:00, so let’s make sure we’re at the theater by 7:30.  We can always get a drink while we wait.

  • Cover charge—the fee one must pay when seeing entertainers in a bar or a club.  Usually this money is split between the entertainers and the “house” or club.  There may also be a drink minimum, usually a 2-drink minimum.  In other words, all patrons must buy at least two drinks.

Because it was New Year’s Eve, the usual $10 cover charge was ip to $25!

  • Concierge—when one stays at a hotel, this is the staff member who handles luggage and mail, makes reservations, and arranges tours.  It is customary to tip the concierge when he or she provides a service.  A concierge will also be happy to make suggestions for restaurants, shopping or shows in town.  Tipping often confuses travelers.  Here’s a good site to check out: The Original Tipping Page

The Original Tipping Page

  • SRO or standing room only—Some theaters will sell SRO tickets.  That means you can get in the theater, but you must stand during the entire performance.

I wanted to see Dave Chappell in concert, but it was standing room only and I was too tired to bother.

C. Conversation

Matt: While we’re in New York, do you think you could make some bookings for a play or two?

Margarette: Sure, it’s been a while since I’ve seen a show.  I can ask the concierge to make some reservations.  Then we can just pick up the tickets at the box office.  Is there anything special you’d like to see?

Matt: I’ve been reading the reviews in the local papers, and The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee looks good.

Margarette: Last I heard, that was standing room only or sold out for the entire time we’re here.  So I think we’ll have to see something else.

Matt: Mother Courage and her Children has a great cast.  And there’s a matinee on Sunday.  Do you like to try for that?

Matt: Mother Courage and her Children

Margarette:  That’s a good idea.  Ron wants us to go to the cabaret starring his friend Joanne that night.  Oh, don’t forget—we have to have cash for the cover charge.

Matt: I think curtain time for Mother Courage is 2:00.  It’s got a two hour running time, so there should be no problem making an evening cabaret.  I have to remember to save my Playbill for Grandma.  She loves to read them.

Margarette: And Monday I am going to hear the symphony orchestra with my friend Ray.  I didn’t think you’d be interested in that, so Avril Lavigne is in town that night.  Want to go?

Matt: Of course!

Matt當然!

Margarette: Just don’t be out too late.  I hope there aren’t too many encores!

Matt: I hope there are at least five!  And Butch Walker is her opening act on this tour.  He’s really good, too.
