Focus

Conducting job interviews in English could be difficult and often makes interviewees nervous.  With certain preparation, it won¡¦t seem so difficult. Here are some useful tips.  First, listen to the interviewer¡¦s questions carefully.  Second, use formal language, instead of slang.  Third, show your strength for the position you apply for. In the following conversation, Jessica, who just graduated from school, is applying for the position of managing editor.  She answers the interviewer¡¦s questions with formal and positive manners.

(Valerie Johnson is the editor-in-chief at Poise magazine.  Jessica just graduated from graduate school.)

Valerie: Hello, Jessica. Nice meeting you. Have a seat.

Jessica: Thanks. It¡¦s a pleasure meeting you.

V: I see here that you are applying for the position of managing editor. Tell me why you are interested in this job.

J: Well, first of all, I¡¦m a big fan of Poise. I¡¦ve been reading Poise for 5 years. I¡¦m attracted to the wide range of topics it covers. I believe my education and my extra curriculum experiences have prepared me for this position.

V: Speaking of education, I notice that on your resume, you wrote that you have a master¡¦s degree on fashion and communications design.  How would your education help you as a managing editor?

J: As a matter of fact, my education about fashion and the mass media, serves as an advantage. I¡¦m sensitive to the most updated information in the fashion industry, and I know how the media works.

V: Sounds nice, but you do know Poise is more than a fashion magazine, right? We also have columns on finance, investment, and health issues. As a managing editor, you not only need to be familiar with these topics, but also oversee the making of every issue. In other words, this is a very demanding job. What are the other strengths you have for this job?

J: Ms. Johnson, I¡¦m fully aware of the responsibility and capabilities this position requires. My strengths include my commitment to work and my experience as an editor for the school newsletter. I¡¦m committed to every task I¡¦m assigned, and I¡¦m familiar with the making of a magazine. Also, I worked as a P.R. for two years in my sorority. All of the above can aid my job as a managing editor.

V: I see. Well, I must say I¡¦m impressed. Thanks for coming and we¡¦ll keep you posted.
